What is the Modified Bavarian Formula?
German universities use a scale from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (lowest passing grade). Applicants with foreign degrees are often converted with the Modified Bavarian Formula:
German grade = 1 + 3 x (Max – Your grade) / (Max – Min passing)
Max is the highest possible grade in your system, and Min passing is the lowest passing grade.
Worked examples
- Percentage: 75 out of 100, minimum passing 50. German grade = 1 + 3 x (100 – 75) / (100 – 50) = 2.5
- CGPA: 3.0 out of 4.0, minimum passing 2.0. German grade = 1 + 3 x (4 – 3) / (4 – 2) = 2.5
- CGPA: 3.5 out of 4.0, minimum passing 2.0. German grade = 1 + 3 x (4 – 3.5) / (4 – 2) = 1.75

FAQ
Is this the official conversion used by German universities? No. It is the most common formula, but each German university or uni-assist decides how your grade is converted. Always check your target university’s rules.
What should I enter as the minimum passing mark? Use your own university’s passing mark. Many Pakistani universities use 50% or a CGPA of 2.0, but this differs between institutions.
Why is a lower German grade better? In Germany, 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the lowest pass, which is the opposite of most grading systems.
Does this work for a 5-point or other CGPA scale? Yes. Enter your scale’s maximum and minimum passing values in the two boxes.
Do I need an official evaluation? Many German universities require your documents to be checked through uni-assist or the university itself. This calculator only gives you an estimate to plan your applications.
